Marijuana has been proven to be one of the safest drugs known to man, less harmful than alcohol or anything you will find in a pharmacy. This plant has been called a miracle drug by many and is quickly growing in popularity for its medicinal properties. Yet despite the growing evidence of the incredible advantages and benign nature of cannabis, there are powerful business and political interests that are very intent on keeping this drug illegal.

The system that incarcerates people for using marijuana is a multi-billion dollar industry. Politicians, law enforcement and prison developers all see great financial benefits from the prohibition of marijuana. These agencies as well as other government and corporate interests all share in the profits made from the seizure of drugs and cash, as well as the fines imposed on the victim for breaking said law. Police officers get bonuses for these arrests, politicians get campaign donations to keep this harmless substance illegal, prison developers get paid a cash amount for every human being that they put in a cage. This is a huge business, where the cash crop happens to be human lives.

The law enforcement system is its own unique scam as I cover in detail in another chapter, but there is also a long list of financial reasons behind the prohibition of this plant. The primary lobby groups you will find supporting laws that criminalize marijuana are alcohol companies, oil companies, tobacco companies, prison developers and pharmaceutical manufacturers. These companies are threatened by the many industrial and medicinal uses that the marijuana/hemp plant has. If marijuana were to be made legal, many of these industries would lose their monopolies because their products would no longer be necessary or practical for widespread use. A plant that can grow almost anywhere and is in completely limitless supply cannot be used to exploit people and is difficult to control, therefore it is not in their best interests for this plant to be legal.

We all know politicians don’t really do what they believe in, they do what they are told and what they are paid to do. Every single piece of legislation that goes through our government has “special interest groups” on both sides of the argument. Whichever side is most “persuasive” or donates the most money to the politician is the side that ultimately decides whether the legislation passes or not.

The pharmaceutical drug industry spends an incredible amount of money to ensure that marijuana remains illegal. This is because marijuana is much safer and more effective than synthetic prescription drugs in treating a wide variety of illnesses. There are many conditions that marijuana can improve greatly without risk, even cancer. A study by Manuel Guzmán of Madrid Spain showed that THC, the active chemical in marijuana can actually inhibit tumor growth. Dr. Ethan Russo , a neurologist and world authority on medical cannabis explains the process in which THC fights cancer in this statement.

“Cancer occurs because cells become immortalized; they fail to heed normal signals to turn off growth. A normal function of remodeling in the body requires that cells die on cue. This is called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. That process fails to work in tumors. THC promotes its reappearance so that gliomas, leukemias, melanomas and other cell types will in fact heed the signals, stop dividing, and die. But, that is not all. The other way that tumors grow is by ensuring that they are nourished: they send out signals to promote angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Cannabinoids turn off these signals as well. It is truly incredible, and elegant.”

This extreme breakthrough has been known about by the establishment since at least 1974 when studies at the Medical College of Virginia showed the ability that THC had in fighting cancer. The results of these tests were reported in the Washington Post on august 18th 1974 and then completely disappeared from the news due to a media blackout. Despite the media blackout many independent scientific investigations have been carried out over the past 20 years that reconfirm the healing power of cannabis. If these details were presented to the public, the pharmaceutical industry would lose billions of dollars.

The alcohol and tobacco industries have an obvious conflict of interest when it comes to marijuana prohibition. Alcohol and tobacco are Americas top vices and both of them are extremely addictive, unhealthy and honestly pretty repulsive when considering the natural cannabis plant as an alternative. These companies are well aware of the threat that marijuana legalization poses on their yearly earnings so they lobby for politicians to vote for prohibition just like many other industries have. There are a lot of corporations and government entities in addition to the ones I mentioned putting a lot of money through the government to keep the drug laws as they are. That includes the oil, cotton and paper industries all of which would lose their cash crops at the hands of industrialized hemp.

Marijuana can cure cancer, heal countless other physical ailments, reduce our dependence on oil based products and prescription pharmaceuticals. All research shows that this plant is not only harmless, but can be extremely beneficial to our environment and our society. Hemp was even used to clean up radiation after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The current social stigma against marijuana is only the result of the propaganda put forth by those industries that benefit financially from marijuana prohibition as well as the overarching control system that wishes to keep our minds enslaved. By exposing the corrupt nature of the drug laws and the system that is enforcing them we can shatter that unjust social stigma and have a fair and sensible dialogue regarding legalization.

“If the words “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” don’t include the right to experiment with your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independence isn’t worth the hemp it was written on.” – Terence McKenna (Philosopher)
